Frequently asked
questions

QWhat is an "immigration procedure specialist" (申請取次)?
+

A certified immigration procedure specialist (申請取次行政書士) is a licensed administrative scrivener who has received additional government authorisation to submit residency applications directly to the immigration bureau on behalf of clients. This means you do not need to personally attend the immigration office — saving significant time and reducing errors. Sakura Immigration Office holds this certification.

QIs the first consultation really free? What can I discuss?
+

Yes — the first consultation is completely free for up to 60 minutes. You can ask about any immigration-related topic: which visa category applies to you, whether you qualify for permanent residency, what to do after a rejection, how to sponsor a foreign employee, and more. Consultations are available in-person at our Nagasaki office, online (Zoom/video call), or at a café in Nagasaki city.

QHow long does the application process take?
+

Processing times are set by the immigration bureau and vary by visa type. Typical timelines: Status renewal or change: 1–3 months · Certificate of Eligibility (sponsoring from overseas): 1–3 months · Permanent Residency: 6 months – 1+ year. These are approximate figures; busy periods or complex cases can take longer. If your current status is expiring soon, contact us as early as possible.

QMy previous application was rejected. Can you help me reapply?
+

Yes. Rejection is not the end — but a careful analysis of why the application was refused is essential before reapplying. We review the rejection notice, identify weaknesses in the previous application, and prepare a significantly stronger case for resubmission. Note that a history of rejections can make immigration scrutiny more intense, which is why working with a specialist is especially important in these cases.

QI live outside Japan. Can I still use your services?
+

Yes, we regularly assist clients who are overseas. If you are applying for a Certificate of Eligibility (to be sponsored by a Japanese employer or family member), the application is submitted in Japan on your behalf anyway. We can communicate entirely via email and LINE, and consultations are available via video call. Document exchange can be handled by post or scanned copies.

QMy documents are in English (or another language). Is that a problem?
+

Not a problem at all. The immigration bureau requires certified Japanese translations for foreign-language documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce records, academic qualifications, and employment certificates. We can arrange certified translations for you (translation fees apply separately). This is a routine part of our service for international clients.

QWhat is the difference between a work visa and a Specified Skilled Worker (特定技能) visa?
+

Standard work visas (e.g. Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services) require a university degree or equivalent professional experience relevant to the job. The Specified Skilled Worker (特定技能) visa was created for workers in specific industries facing labour shortages — such as hospitality, food service, construction, and agriculture — and does not require a degree but does require passing industry-specific exams. We advise on which category best fits your background.

QWe're a company that wants to hire a foreign national. Where do we start?
+

Start with a free consultation — we'll verify that the role qualifies for the visa category you intend to sponsor, check any company requirements (capital, employee size, financial stability), and give you a realistic timeline. Employers must also register foreign hires with Hello Work (公共職業安定所). We handle the entire application process and can provide ongoing residency management support as your team grows.

Leave the difficult parts
to the specialists.

Nagasaki has been Japan's window to the world for centuries — a city shaped by the meeting of cultures and people from every corner of the globe. It is precisely because of this history that I feel so passionate about helping the international community here build the lives they envision in Japan.

Immigration law is complex and the stakes are high. A poorly prepared application can mean months of delay, rejection, or worse — being unable to continue your life in Japan. My goal is simple: to remove that uncertainty entirely. You deserve to focus on your work, your family, and your future — not on paperwork.

Whether you are just arriving, reuniting with a loved one, building a business, or planning to make Japan your permanent home, I will handle every detail with the care it deserves. Please reach out — the first conversation is always free.
